Classifying Substances, Part I

• Students apply knowledge of the concept of indicators to sort substances into categories

base - a substance that accepts hydrogen ions in a reaction.  Bases taste bitter & are usually corrosive (ex: ammonia)
alkaline - anything having a pH greater than 7
phenophthalein (PT) solution - an indicator that turns pink in basic solutions
