Parent Letter 2-6-12

                            February 6, 2012

Dear Parents,

Our school is having an “I Love To Read” celebration during the month of February.  Here are the plans:

Beginning on February 6th, students will keep track of minutes they spend reading.  Each day, totals will be collected and hearts will be added to our chain of hearts that will be hung up in the building.  Our goal is to beat last year’s total minutes read of over 37,000 minutes!

Each morning students from one classroom K through 6 will share a brief “literacy moment” over the intercom right after morning announcements. Someone from our class will be reading a poem on Monday, February 13th.

The week of February 13th to 17th we will have a Book Swap, so please be gathering your used (or new) children’s books to send in for others to enjoy.  Each classroom will collect these books in a box all week, and then swap the box with another classroom in that grade on Friday.  Students will be able to choose “new” and different books to keep and enjoy!

On Monday, February 20th from 8:00-8:30 we will have a “Read-In”.  Parents, grandparents, community members, and guests can spend this half hour reading to and with students in all classrooms.  It’s a great chance to show children how much you value and enjoy reading, and a wonderful time for children to show you what they can do.  Guest readers are invited to meet upstairs in the Family Room for quick “nibbles” from 7:45 to 8:00.

On Thursday, February 23rd at the Community Gathering  (8:00 a.m.) hosted by second grade, we’ll celebrate reading even more.  On that day, students and staff will be dressing as their favorite book characters.  Our school’s total minutes read will also be announced.  We’ll also hear about an exciting incentive for reading over vacation!

Have a great week!
