We celebrate reading during the month of February and invite you to participate.  Here are the plans:

Beginning on February 6th, students will keep track of minutes they spend reading.  Each day, totals will be collected and hearts will be added to our chain of hearts that will be hung up in the building.   Let’s try to beat last year’s total minutes read of over 37,500 minutes!   Our students will also be writing Valentine letters to military veterans the first week of February.

Each morning students from one classroom K through 6 will share a brief ”literacy moment” over the intercom right after morning announcements. This proved to be both entertaining and surprising last year!

The week of February 13th to 17th we will have a Book Swap, so please be gathering your used (or new) children’s books to send in for others to enjoy.  Each classroom will collect these books in a box all week, and then swap the box with another classroom in that grade on Friday.  Students will be able to choose “new” and different books to keep and enjoy!

On Monday, February 20th from 8:00 to 8:30 we will have a “Read-In”.
Parents, grandparents, community members, and guests can spend this half
hour reading to and with students in all classrooms.  It’s a great chance to
show children how much you value and enjoy reading, and a wonderful time for children to show you what they can do. The more guest readers we have, the more we all enjoy this.  Guest readers are invited to meet upstairs in the Family Room for quick “nibbles” from 7:45 to 8:00.

On Thursday, February 23rd at the Community Gathering  (8:00 A.M.) hosted by second grade, we’ll celebrate reading even more.  On that day, students and staff will be dressing as their favorite book characters.  Our school’s total minutes read will also be announced.  Can we top last year’s total?  We also hope to have an exciting announcement about reading over vacation, which is another important goal of this annual celebration.

Our aim is to encourage lots of school and home reading in a fun way.   Please save the dates, and join us!                                   The Reading Team
